The Security and Justice for Tigreans in Ethiopia is shocked and deeply saddened by the senseless killing of a popular Oromo artist Hachalu Hundessa. We express our condolence to his family and friends. The killing clearly indicates the utter failure of the current government to bring about peace, security and stability. The break down of law and order in Ethiopia in the past two years is created and facilitated by an environment of hate, ethnic based conflict, character assassinations, and pitting one group over another. Such acts of the government has resulted in assassinations of the Chief of Staff General SeareMekonnen, engineer Simegnew Bekele of GERD, other military leaders, high and mid-level ranking regional government officials, political leaders, and average citizens.

In a callous exercise and misguided wish to consolidate power and silence the people, the government has arrested Mr. Bekele Gerba, Mr. Jawar Mohammed two prominent political leaders, journalists of Oromo Media Network (OMN), and other individuals. The arrest will exacerbate the already ruinous conditions and might even lead to further violence and insecurity. We believe what is needed instead is a sober and poised leadership. A leadership that will foster unity and understanding; a leadership that clearly is in sync with the political wishes and aspirations of the people; a leadership that commits itself to the rule of law; a leadership that has the temerity to uphold the constitution; a leadership with commitment to the interests and sovereignty of the country and its people. Only leadership with such commitment and fortitude can avert the impending disaster.
