History Repeats Itself: Turkey and Tigray Genocide

1. Introduction

by becoming one of the principal actors in the Tigray genocide that has been underway since November 2020. No previous conflicts between Tigray and Turkey, no border disputes, and no ideological factors could explain Turkey’s eagerness to shed Tigrayan blood, unless it is a 100-year Turkish anniversary of the 1915-16 Armenian genocide. I will leave whether the explanation is an anniversary, an addiction to genocide, or seeking global recognition for its genocidal success, suffice it to say it has had no reason to be part of the genocide in Tigray and hence completely uncalled for. To make the speculation complete. One might add a commercial greed to sell drones or expand potential markets as it seems all of a sudden in love with Africa. Well, it could have sold those sweaters to Africa with shedding Tigryan blood or destroying its infrastructure, therefore no apparent reason to star in the Tigrayan atrocities.

Recall, the Armenia genocide is about 100 years old. Consequently, as of 2021, 31 countries have recognized the events as genocide , as do the vast majority of historians. The genocide in Tigray is, however, still under internationally recognize it as genocide, even though the Hall Marks of a genocide are there for all to see and international media has each act of the Ethiopian government as perfectly fitting the definitions of a genocide. Consequently, writers and mainly international organizations refer to what is taking place as clear evidence of genocide.

Let me briefly remind those that have been less informed of world events as to why human right organizations and the international media have described the atrocities in Tigray as genocide.

2. The Genocide in Tigray and Turkey’s Role in it

If these atrocities and similar others could not constitute a genocide and shock the world, particularly those UN and humanitarian organizations and powerful countries that profess to care about human dignity, abuse and rule of law I don’t know what does? I am not that naïve, I do understand the hypocrisy and lip service that exists around, but such a silence in the face of such naked and blatant atrocities in 2021 must be one of the shameful and sad stories that history will remember;
