My parents never went to school but my dad learned how to read and write through the church. My father was hard-working and he was only 12 years old when he moved to start a life on his own in a city near his village.
Rotating the Governance of the Capital City of the Zones in the Regional State of Tigray
Desta, Asayehgn, 5-8-19 -
After more than two decades of remarkable economic achievement, it is discouraging to notice that currently, Ethiopia is undergoing major social upheavals and economic crises. As MacDiarmid (September 12, 2018) aptly states, around mid- 2018, more than 2.6 million Ethiopians were displaced. Sadly, these Ethiopians now occupy downtrodden shelters, churches, and depleted homes.
The Uses and Abuses of "Neoliberalism"
Neoliberalism is the linguistic omnivore of our times, a neologism that threatens to swallow up all the other words around it. Twenty years ago, the term "neoliberalism" barely registered in English-language debates. Now it is virtually inescapable, applied to everything from ...

How to spot a liar - even if he isn't a cabinet minister
To be perfectly honest, this seems to be a prime time for lies, mistruths and pants on fire. We have to navigate fake news constantly, while dodging conspiracy theorists, antivaxxers and misleading anti-abortion activists on social media. Last week, the Washington Post calculated that Donald Trump had told his...
Constitutional backsliding in Ethiopia?
Tesfai Dirar 5-7-19 - This paper examines whether there have been symptoms of constitutional retrogression in Ethiopia since April 2, 2018. It draws on two of the five indicators of constitutional retrogression that Huq and Ginsberg (2018) identified. These are centralization and politicization of executive power and shrinking of the public sphere. April 2, 2018 is important because that was the date Ethiopia's current Prime Minister took power...

Is it by accident or by design that the compass went wrong in Ethiopia?
Dr. Yohannes Aberra Ayele 5-5-19 - World geography has become a firmly established field of knowledge beginning from ancient civilization in Greece. One of the commonsense knowledge in geography is the compass directions, namely North, South, West and East. In Ethiopia no one completes primary school without...
Which Way Ethiopia?
Teodros Kiros (PH.D) 5-4-19 - It has been a year since the new regime came to power with much promise and hurried decisions. At first, the nation was thrilled that change is coming, without knowing what the changes would entail. The media had prepared the nation to turn its back over the last twenty-seven years, a blend of the good and bad, achievements and losses, opportunities missed, and dreamy goals.

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) - Dozens of civilians were shot dead in ethnic clashes in Ethiopia's northern Amhara state, a regional official said Friday, describing the attacks as retaliation for earlier violence."Search and rescue missions are still ongoing to find victims and survivors from Monday's attack, but I can confirm the death toll runs into several dozen," Geleta Hailu, the director of communications in neighboring Benishangul Gumuz state, told AFP.
Reagen (Debretsion): "Mr. Gorbachev (Isayas) - tear down this wall"
Dr. Yohannes Aberra Ayele 5-2-19 - I had a chance to see the Berlin wall before it was torn down 1989. It was a scene of irrationality where you sadly observe folks on both sides of the wall hanging their clothes to dry on the balconies of their apartments, less than 100 meters of distance separated by a wall. It was not just 100 meters, but West and East Berlin were worlds apart.
The adverse impacts of Mekelle's human and vehicle population growth and solutions.
Tesfai Hailu, May 01, 2019 - Although, to my knowledge, up-to-date population or a reliable vehicle registration data is not available, a drastic population increase in human as well a vehicle (including those with license plates from outside Tigrai) has been starkly visible in Mekelle, particularly for the last year. However, while this growth is a testimony of the city’s ability to offer a sense of security, peace, tranquility and economic opportunities, the growth also has its undesirable side-effects.
(Interesting solution to a growing pain problem for the city of Mekelle! Authorities should heed the call and take the well-thought-out suggestion with an open mind.)
Move fast and break things
Abiy is a leader of multiple characters rather than a steady manager like his predecessor Hailemariam Desalegn. In his inaugural speech, he promised to transform governance and transition to genuine democracy. He brought a different flavor to EPRDF Ethiopia where narratives were repeated consistently at every level of the state structure. He spoke differently, he acted differently. He has created a very strong Office of the Prime Minister, at times compromising the role of other ministries. Experts are hired with donor funds, with some signs of nepotism, rather than motivating existing staff...
Thanks to EPRDF, Ethiopia is at the worst crossroad of all crossroads! It is led by a populist leader with no significant constituency behind him! Not sure how the West is promoting Abiy to be a reformer without an institution to back him! How can Abiy become an effective leader without the support of the EPRDF members? The West has one only choice to keep Abiy in power - help him win a new election where he can form a new coalition to govern as a liberal leader. Otherwise, Abiy cannot remain an effective leader without a clear mandate. The current status quo is not sustainable! His current mandate is to govern as an EPRDF leader, not as a leader of all kinds of disgruntled TPLF haters!

Charting a way forward for Eritrea
For more than four decades one figure has towered over Eritrean life. Isaias Afwerki has ruled Eritrea with a rod of iron, just as he once led the liberation movement that successfully liberated the country in 1991. Previously an enormous asset, he has become the chief obstacle to progress. But his rule, once all but unchallenged, is now questioned from all quarters.
